VAT / GST Calculator: Add Tax or Extract It From the Price

Is the tax already included in the price on the shelf, or added at checkout? The answer changes by country, by store, and sometimes by product — and getting it wrong means mispriced invoices, surprised customers, and accounting headaches. Our free VAT / GST Calculator handles both directions: add VAT to a net price to get the gross total, or extract the VAT hidden inside a tax-inclusive price to reveal the net amount and the tax component. Built-in rate presets for major economies plus a custom rate field cover virtually every real-world case.

Freelancers issuing cross-border invoices, shop owners checking supplier quotes, and travelers decoding foreign receipts all hit the same two formulas — this tool just runs them instantly, with a multi-item table for full invoices. Everything is computed in your browser; nothing is uploaded anywhere. One important note: this tool does arithmetic, not tax advice. Rates and rules change, so always confirm with your local tax authority before filing or invoicing. Results are estimates for reference only.

What VAT and GST Actually Are

Value Added Tax (VAT) and Goods and Services Tax (GST) are consumption taxes collected at each stage of production and sale, with businesses generally reclaiming the tax they paid on inputs. For the end customer the effect is simple: the price you see may or may not include the tax, depending on where you are. In the UK and EU, consumer prices are almost always shown tax-inclusive — the £120 price tag already contains 20% VAT. In the US, sales tax is added at checkout. In Pakistan, GST-inclusive pricing is common at retail, while B2B quotes are often net. Knowing which convention applies is half the battle; the calculator handles the math for both.

The Two Directions: Add vs Extract

Adding VAT to a net price

Use this when your quote is tax-exclusive. The formulas are: VAT amount = net × rate, gross = net × (1 + rate). A $1,000 net invoice at Pakistan's 18% GST becomes $1,180 gross, with $180 of tax. This is the mode for freelancers and B2B sellers whose price lists are quoted before tax.

Extracting VAT from a gross price

Use this when the price already includes tax. The formulas are: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate), VAT = gross − net. A £120 tax-inclusive price at the UK's 20% VAT contains £20 of tax and £100 net — note the tax is not 20% of £120 (£24), a classic mistake. Division, not multiplication, is the correct extraction. This mode is essential for businesses reclaiming input tax and for anyone reconciling foreign receipts. For the underlying percentage math, see our Percentage Calculator.

Rate Presets: Major Economies

The tool ships with verified standard-rate presets (always confirm current rates with your local tax authority, as governments do revise them):

Country / RegionStandard RateNotes
Pakistan (GST)18%Standard rate since FY2023-24
United Kingdom (VAT)20%Standard rate; reduced 5% on some goods
India (GST)18%Common slab; other slabs exist (5%, 12%, 28%)
Germany (VAT)19%EU standard rate band 19-25%
France (VAT)20%Standard rate; reduced rates apply
Saudi Arabia (VAT)15%Raised from 5% in 2020
UAE (VAT)5%Introduced 2018

Many countries also run reduced rates for food, medicine, books, and children's goods — and zero-rated or exempt categories on top. The custom rate field covers any of these: enter any percentage and both directions work exactly the same. Selling across borders? Multi-Item Table: Invoice-Ready Totals

Real invoices have line items, not single prices. The multi-item table lets you add rows — each with a description, quantity, and unit price — and the tool computes per-line net, VAT, and gross, then rolls everything into invoice totals. It is the fastest way to sanity-check a supplier quote or to build the tax breakdown for your own invoice. When the numbers look right, generate the actual document with our Invoice Generator.

Key Features

  • Both directions: add VAT to net prices or extract VAT from tax-inclusive prices, with formulas shown.
  • Verified rate presets: Pakistan 18%, UK 20%, India 18%, Germany 19%, France 20%, Saudi Arabia 15%, UAE 5% — plus any custom rate.
  • Multi-item table: per-line net, VAT, and gross with automatic invoice totals.
  • Clear breakdown: every result shows net, tax amount, and gross separately — no guessing which is which.
  • Custom rates: reduced rates, zero-rating checks, and historical rates all supported.
  • Instant and private: all calculations run client-side; no data leaves your browser.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — adding GST. A Lahore freelancer quotes Rs 200,000 net for a project. At Pakistan's 18% GST: tax = Rs 36,000, gross invoice = Rs 236,000. Quote the gross on the invoice so the client sees the full obligation.

Example 2 — extracting VAT. A London receipt shows £60 total, VAT included. At 20%: net = 60 ÷ 1.20 = £50, VAT = £10. If you remembered to multiply (£60 × 20% = £12) you would overstate the tax by £2 — the division matters.

Example 3 — multi-item invoice. Three line items at €100, €250, and €50 net, Germany's 19% VAT. Line VAT: €19, €47.50, €9.50. Invoice totals: €400 net, €76 VAT, €476 gross. The table computes all of this in one pass.

Example 4 — comparing across borders. A $500 net item in the UAE (5% VAT) costs $525 gross; the same item in Saudi Arabia (15% VAT) costs $575. Same product, $50 difference from tax alone — extraction and conversion together explain many "why is it cheaper there?" mysteries.

Why Receipts Differ by Country

Two identical €100-net products can show completely different shelf prices in Berlin (19%) and Paris (20%) — and both receipts are correct. Add in reduced rates (many EU countries tax food and books lower), tourist refund schemes, and duty-free zones, and cross-border receipt comparison gets genuinely confusing. The calculator's custom rate field plus extraction mode lets you strip any receipt back to its net price, which is the only number that compares fairly across borders.

Honest Limitations — Not Tax Advice

This tool performs standard VAT/GST arithmetic. It does not know which rate legally applies to your specific goods or services, whether you qualify for reduced, zero-rated, or exempt treatment, how reverse-charge rules work for cross-border B2B sales, or what your filing obligations are. Tax law is jurisdiction-specific and changes over time. Use the calculator to understand the numbers, then verify the applicable rate and rules with your local tax authority or a qualified tax professional before invoicing, reclaiming, or filing.

How to Use the Tool

  • Choose Add VAT (net → gross) or Extract VAT (gross → net).
  • Enter the amount and pick a preset rate or type a custom one.
  • Read the net, tax amount, and gross breakdown.
  • For invoices, switch to the multi-item table and add your line items.
  • Double-check the applicable rate with your local tax authority before relying on the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between VAT and GST? In practice, very little for the end user — both are consumption taxes on goods and services. Different countries simply use different names (and slightly different mechanics) for the same idea.

How do I remove 20% VAT from a price? Divide by 1.20, do not multiply by 0.80. A £120 VAT-inclusive price is £100 net with £20 VAT. Multiplying gives the wrong answer.

What is the VAT rate in Pakistan / UAE / Saudi Arabia? Pakistan's standard GST rate is 18%, the UAE charges 5% VAT, and Saudi Arabia charges 15% VAT. Rates can change — confirm with the local tax authority.

Is this tax advice? No. The tool does arithmetic on the rate you provide. Which rate applies to you, and your filing obligations, are questions for your local tax authority or a qualified professional.
