What is the Wheel of Names?

The Wheel of Names is a free online random picker that turns decision-making into a show. Type in a list of names — students, team members, contest entrants, dinner options, anything — and watch them appear as colorful slices on a spinning prize wheel. Hit spin, enjoy the suspense as the wheel whirs around with a clickety sound, and celebrate when the pointer lands on your randomly chosen winner. It takes a boring draw and makes it an event. Whether you are picking a student to answer a question, drawing a raffle winner on stage, or settling a friendly debate about where to eat, the wheel brings theater to the moment — the slowing spin, the ticking sound, the collective gasp as the pointer settles.

Randomness people can see is randomness people trust. Unlike a hidden random-number generator, a spinning wheel makes the selection visible and dramatic, which is exactly why teachers use it to call on students fairly, streamers use it for live giveaways, and managers use it to assign tasks without accusations of favoritism. Every spin uses your browser's cryptographic-grade random number generator, and each slice gets a mathematically equal chance — no weighting, no rigging, no funny business. The result is fair by construction and fun by design. That visible fairness matters more than people expect. When a teacher picks names from a hat, someone always suspects the draw; when a manager assigns weekend shifts by fiat, morale dips. A public spin removes doubt because everyone watches the same outcome unfold together.

Our free version keeps everything simple and unlimited. Add as many names as you like, customize colors, remove the winner after each spin for elimination rounds, or keep everyone in for repeated draws. The wheel runs on a smooth HTML5 canvas that works on projectors, smartboards, phones, and desktops, with optional sound effects and a fullscreen mode for maximum drama. No account, no app to install, no cost — just open the page and spin. Your lists are saved automatically in your browser, so your class roster or giveaway entrants are still there tomorrow — no retyping, no lost work.

How to Use the Wheel of Names

1. Add your names: Type each name into the input box and press Enter, or paste a whole list at once — one name per line.
2. Customize the look: Pick a color theme, toggle sound effects, and decide whether winners stay in or get removed after each spin.
3. Review the wheel: Watch the slices build in real time. Edit or delete any entry by clicking it in the list.
4. Hit the spin button: Click SPIN (or press the spacebar) and enjoy the animation as the wheel spins and gradually slows.
5. Announce the winner: The winning name pops up in a celebration overlay with confetti — perfect for projecting to a room.
6. Spin again or reset: Remove the winner for elimination draws, or keep spinning with the full list for repeated picks.
7. Share the moment: Use fullscreen mode on a projector or share your screen on a video call so everyone sees the spin live.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the wheel truly random?

Yes. Each spin uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator, and every slice is given a mathematically equal share of the wheel. There is no weighting or rigging unless you deliberately duplicate an entry.

How many names can I add?

There is no practical limit — the wheel handles hundreds of entries. With very long lists the slices get thin, so consider splitting enormous draws into rounds.

Can I remove the winner after a spin?

Yes. Elimination mode removes the winner from the wheel automatically, which is ideal for raffles and tournaments. You can also keep winners in for repeated draws.

Do I need an account?

No. The wheel works instantly with no signup, and your name lists stay in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

Can I use it for a legal giveaway?

The tool provides fair random selection, but giveaway legality depends on your location's contest laws. Check local rules about permits, disclosures, and "no purchase necessary" clauses before running a public promotion.

Does it work on a smartboard or projector?

Yes — the wheel is built on HTML5 canvas and runs in any modern browser, with a fullscreen mode designed for projecting to a room.

Can I customize the colors?

Yes. Choose from several vibrant color themes to match your classroom, brand, or event style — dark mode for evening streams, bright primaries for classrooms, and muted professional palettes for corporate draws.

Can I put my logo on the wheel?

The wheel itself uses color themes rather than custom images, which keeps spins fast and readable at any size. For branded giveaways, place your logo on the surrounding page or stream overlay — the winner celebration screen puts the name front and center where sponsors get noticed.

Is it really free?

Completely. Unlimited names, unlimited spins, no account, no hidden premium tier.
